A vasectomy is a safe and effective option for couples who have decided that they are past the child bearing stage. However, as a patient’s life situation changes, it is common for patients to change their minds about the decision that was made at the time of the vasectomy. Second marriages, the loss of a child, or a simple change of heart can all lead men to seek a vasectomy reversal in the pursuit of a successful pregnancy. Urologist Larry Lipshultz offers the most advanced treatments patients in San Antonio and other areas of Texas to help men reach their health and life goals. While the vasectomy reversal procedure is associated with some expense, financing options can make the procedure affordable for any patient’s budget.
How Much Does a Vasectomy Reversal Cost?
The final cost of a vasectomy reversal will include the surgeon’s fee as well as the fees for the hospital and anesthesia. While the cost of each procedure will vary slightly based on the patient’s unique circumstances and whether this is an initial procedure or a repeat procedure, the average surgeon fee for a reverse vasectomy is between $3,900 and $4,500. With the hospital fees costing around $3,700 and the anesthesia costing about $1,200, the total cost of a vasectomy reversal may cost up to $9,400.
Financing Options
Once a patient has decided on a vasectomy reversal to allow for the possibility of conception, most are eager to move forward with the procedure. However, some patients do not have the full amount available to cover the cost of the procedure up front. We will always check with insurance providers to see if any coverage is available. Fortunately, even without insurance coverage, there are financing options for our patients to consider.
- Payment plan: Our office offers our own payment plans to patients that allow them to spread out the cost of the procedure. We allow patients to make a non-refundable deposit of $500 when the surgery is scheduled. We then ask that half the surgeon’s fee is paid four weeks prior to surgery with the remainder of the surgeon’s fee being due two weeks prior to surgery.
- Medical financing: There are many companies that offer financing that is specifically meant to cover medical procedures. Offered in the form of a loan or credit card, these financing options allow patients to borrow the full amount of the vasectomy reversal and then make monthly payments. While interest rates will apply to the loan, many companies offer introductory interest rates or other special offers if the loan is paid off within a certain timeframe.
- Flex spending accounts: Flex spending accounts are a benefit now offered by many employers. This allows employees to set aside a certain amount of money pre-tax and use it on medical expenses. Most flex spending accounts recognize a vasectomy reversal as an approved medical expense.
