Customizing Your Treatment Plan
In order to create your treatment plan, Dr. Lipshultz will first need to diagnose the underlying cause of your infertility. He will meet with you to discuss your infertility details and medical history. After conducting an extensive general and reproductive exam, Dr. Lipshultz may recommend additional assessment in the form of semen analysis, ultrasound imaging, genetic testing, or hormone evaluation. He will use these processes to diagnose the cause of your infertility.
The three major sources of poor male reproductive function are pre-testicular (hormonal, genetic), testicular (resulting from disorder, disease, or injury to the testes), and post-testicular (relating to the movement of sperm beyond the testes). Each of these may require a distinct method of treatment. It is possible that your infertility results from more than one cause, in which case Dr. Lipshultz will adjust your fertility therapy accordingly.
It is also possible Dr. Lipshultz may not be able to determine a definitive cause of your infertility, as some cases of infertility are unexplained. This does not mean, however, that fertility treatment will be ineffective. While it is always preferable to proceed with a firm diagnosis, our non-surgical male fertility treatments have proven successful even in cases of unexplained infertility.
Non-surgical Male Fertility Treatments
Based on the results of diagnostic testing, Dr. Lipshultz will recommend one or more of the following non-surgical treatments:
- Hormone Therapy: If low testosterone or other endocrine issues factor into your infertility, Dr. Lipshultz can provide testosterone-stimulating medication (HCG). The medications involved in this treatment can be injected into your skin or taken as a pill (clomiphene, anastrozole).
- Nutritional Supplements: Certain amino acids and vitamins may improve the function of your reproductive system. These include antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, and selenium), coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, B vitamins, and zinc. We have developed a proprietary blend of some of these (XSEED®).
-
Pharmacological Medications: These include phosphodiesterase inhibitors and kallikreins, which improve protein function, and bromocriptine, a form of dopamine.
-
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (or ICSI): This is a procedure that can be performed during in vitro fertilization. Once your partner’s (or donor’s) egg and your sperm sample have been collected, the healthiest sperm will be collected and injected directly into the oocytes (egg cells). This increases the chances of successful fertilization for implantation into your partner’s (or surrogate’s) uterus.
Dr. Lipshultz can further detail these therapies and explain which are suitable for your needs during your initial consultation. He can also explain our surgical treatment options at this time.
